Neon Genesis Evangelion is an anime series that debuted in 1995 at the hands of the studios Gainax It is Tatsunoko Production.
In the year 2015, the Angels, huge and tremendously powerful alien war machines, appear in Tokyo for the second time. The only hope for humanity’s survival lies in the Evangelion, a humanoid fighting machine developed by NERV, a special agency of the United Nations. Capable of withstanding anything the Angels can throw at them, the Evangelions’ only drawback lies in the limited number of people capable of piloting them. Only a handful of teenagers, all born fourteen years ago, nine months after the Angels appeared, are able to interact with an Evangelion.
One of these teenagers is Ikari Shinji, whose father leads the NERV team that developed and maintains the Evangelions. Thrown into a whirlwind of battles and events he does not understand, Shinji is forced to delve into the depths of his own inner resources in search of the courage and strength not just to fight, but to survive, or risk losing everything.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is an existential mecha series that has rightfully earned its reputation as one of the most mind-bending anime of all time. Evangelion is unlike anything else, largely due to Hideaki Anno’s intense involvement in the production of the series.
It’s Anno’s own feelings and doubts that take over the ending of Evangelion, which devolves into heady philosophical ruminations rather than a tangible action conclusion. The ending of Evangelion caused so much uproar that it led to the release of Death & Rebirth, The End of Evangelion, and even the Rebuild of Evangelion films, which gave the franchise an entirely new ending.
