Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is serial shounen which is characterized by many tragic events related to the death of its characters. This is something that naturally happens, considering that the core of the story is centered on a big battle between humans who act as Demon Slayers and the devil himself.

Kimetsu no Yaiba full of touching stories of sacrifice. Especially the Demon Slayers, they must be willing to risk their lives to fulfill their duties against dangerous demons.

On the other hand, some demons have also gone through bitter times in their lives, which then led them astray on the wrong path, and ended up in a very sad way.

This article summarizes a number of the saddest loss events in Kimetsu no Yaiba and contains little spoilers for fans who haven’t read the manga.

12. Tamayo

Lady Tamayo was introduced as one of the characters that Muzan Kibutsuji transformed into a demon. He was suffering from an illness, then the Demon King came and offered him ‘cure’ by becoming a demon too.

Tamayo accepts Muzan’s offer and hopes to continue seeing her family. However, what happened was that Tamayo massacred his own family and the people around him, then ended up as Muzan’s subordinate.

Until one day, Yoriichi Tsugikuni almost defeated Muzan, then freed Tamayo from the Demon King’s shackles.

Tamayo then becomes a demon who sides with humans. He uses science to find a way to kill Muzan. Tamayo played an important role in weakening the Demon King at the start final war.

Tamayo sacrifices her own life in order to poison Muzan with a special drug she has developed. The last words he conveyed to his great enemy were a request for his family to return.

11. Kagaya Ubuyashiki

Apart from Tamayo, another character who plays an important role in weakening Muzan at the start of the final battle is Kagaya Ubuyashiki alias Oyakata-sama, who is none other than the Leader of the Demon Slayer Corps.

Kagaya doesn’t specialize in fighting. That’s why he was able to lure Muzan to his residence and make the Demon King not expect to be attacked.

In fact, Kagaya had prepared a suicide bomb to blow herself up with Muzan. Not only was he the victim, but also his house and part of his family.

This attitude of sacrifice proves Kagaya’s seriousness in his role as corps leader. In fact, there is a possibility that the curse he suffered could have disappeared along with Muzan’s death.

Gyomei Himejima was one of the victims who fell during the final battle against Muzan. Sadly, the Stone Pillar could have survived if he received medical treatment, but he chose not to be treated.

In the moments of his death, Gyomei felt surrounded by the children he once cared for but who ended tragically at the hands of the devil. Ironically, at that time Gyomei was actually thought to be the perpetrator who had massacred the children.

Gyomei died crying. However, there was a smile on his face, because he could finally be reunited with the children he loved.

9. Shinobu Kocho

Shinobu Kocho has prepared the deadliest attack for her fight against Doma the Upper Moon Demon 2, as a form of revenge for the death of Kanae Kocho, Shinobu’s older sister.

Before the war started, Shinobu had swallowed her own body weight in Wisteria poison. He realized that he couldn’t possibly rely on physical strength to defeat Doma, so he would let his body be absorbed by the demon, then let the poison work from within.

This tactic proved to be fruitful. After Shinobu was completely absorbed by Doma, Kanao Tsuyuri and Inosuke Hasibira immediately took important roles to continue the struggle for the Insect Pillar.

8. Genya Shinazugawa

Even though he doesn’t have the ability to use breathing techniques, Genya Shinazugawa doesn’t just give up so he can make amends with his older brother, Sanemi Shinazugawa.

Genya utilizes his special ability to transform into a demon for a few moments after consuming demon cells. He took a big role alongside Sanemi, Gyomei, and Muichiro Tokito in the battle against Upper Rank 1, Kokushibo.

Unfortunately, the war forced Genya to give up his life. He was destroyed like ashes because he died in his demon mode. This was the most traumatic loss, especially for Sanemi, because his younger brother died right before his own eyes.

One thing to be grateful for is the Shinazugawa Brothers who succeeded in straightening out the misunderstandings that had put a distance between the two of them.

7. Muichiro Tokito

Mist Pillar Muichiro Tokito joins Genya, Sanemi, and Gyomei in the fight against Kokushibo. During the war, he discovered the fact that the enemy he was facing was his own ancestor.

Muichiro died with his body split open due to Kokushibo’s fatal attack. This is a very heartbreaking incident, especially considering that Mui is still very young, in fact he is the youngest among the Pillars.

6. Yuichiro Tokito

Muichiro finally remembers his past life during a desperate fight against the 5 Upper Moon Demon Gyokko. At that time, a memory emerged about his twin brother, Yuichiro Tokito.

Unfortunately, their relationship doesn’t seem to be good, especially after both of their parents died. Yuichiro is always rude and seems to belittle Mui.

Until one night, a demon attacked and severed Yuichiro’s left arm who was trying to protect Mui. Muichiro was finally able to fight and kill the demon, but he couldn’t save Yuichiro who had lost his blood.

In his final moments, Yuichiro was able to confirm that his twin brother was still alive. The two of them met again after Muichiro died, where Yuichiro was seen scolding Mui for dying at a young age.

5. Tanjiro’s family

Since the start of the series, fans were immediately faced with a terrible incident that befell Tanjiro’s family, consisting of Tanjiro’s mother and five younger siblings. They are attacked by a demon who appears to be Muzan, and one of Tanjiro’s younger siblings, Nezuko, is left alive as a demon.

This tragic event is the background for Tanjiro’s long journey as a Demon Slayer whose ambition is to take revenge and return Nezuko to a fully human being.

4. Akaza

The figure of Akaza the Demon of the Upper Moon 3 is really hated because he was responsible for the death of Kyojuro Rengoku’s Fire Pillar. However, his past and how he finally died really attracted fans’ sympathy.

Akaza fought against Tanjiro Kamado and Water Pillar Giyu Tomioka during final war. He was really able to make the two Demon Slayers battered and could possibly kill them both.

However, Akaza miraculously regained his humanity. He reminisces about his bitter past, then hears his loved ones asking Akaza to stop.

Akaza did not recover from the wounds on his body and lost his motivation to fight. He chose to die and be reunited with his loved ones.

3. Kyojuro Rengoku

Kyojuro Rengoku the Pillar of Fire is Hashira the first to be told fell in Kimetsu no Yaiba. This happened during arc Mugen Train, where Rengoku fights one on one against Akaza.

Rengoku’s death then left deep wounds for many parties. Moreover, he appears as a cheerful figure and is happy to be sent with Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu, who are actually beginners.

During his duel against Akaza, Rengoku ensures that Tanjiro and the others are not injured. Then, when he was about to die, he gave Tanjiro some advice.

Rengoku left calmly with a smile on his face. He saw his late mother who warmly welcomed him to go together to the afterlife.

2. Jigoro Kuwajima

Jigoro Kuwajima is a former Lightning Pillar and mentor to Zenitsu Agatsuma and Kaigaku. He is known as a tough figure, but is actually a very sensitive person.

Jigoro died horribly after doing it seppuku against himself, namely by slashing his stomach. The reason is because of a sense of failure and shame because one of his students, namely Kaigaku, betrayed the Demon Slayer Corps and became a devil.

It’s a shame, because Kaigaku’s actions are not actually Jigoro’s responsibility.

Obanai Iguro’s Snake Pillar and Mitsuri Kanroji’s Love Pillar do have different backgrounds, but they are both sad. Obanai was raised to be sacrificed to the Snake Demon, while Mitsuri grew up without love from the opposite sex because of some things in her that they could not accept.

The two of them then met and developed feelings for each other. Unfortunately, Obanai and Mitsuri’s love story had to end tragically. Both received fatal wounds during the battle against Muzan, then fell together.

Ironically, before losing consciousness, they made a promise to meet again and get married in the next life.

That’s the saddest series of losses Kimetsu no Yaiba which is truly tragic and will leave an impression on fans’ memories. The death of anyone who succeeds makes you difficult move on?
