This was the first Super Saiyan 3 drawing discarded by Akira Toriyama

Do you think you’ve seen all the possible forms of the Saiyans in “Dragon Ball”? So, you need to know a piece of history that almost changed the look of one of the most iconic transformations in the saga: Super Saiyan 3.

That powerful mane that Goku displays in the fight against Majin Buu could have been very different if Akira Toriyama, the creator of the series, had followed one of his first sketches.

In some development notes that have come to light, we discovered that the initial concept of Super Saiyan 3 was less exaggerated and more similar to Super Saiyan 2.

In this initial draft, Goku appeared with less prominent musculature and shorter hair, similar to Vegeta’s hairstyle. And yes, the iconic missing eyebrows were already part of the package from these first sketches.

This initial design was recently reproduced by artist @nicolasrivas920, who gave us a glimpse of what could have been.

Goku’s “skinnier” and “younger” look raises the question: Did Toriyama scrap this sketch because it might confuse fans into thinking they were seeing a younger version of Gohan?

We’re not sure why this design was left aside, but in an expansive universe like “Dragon Ball” where each new episode or film can introduce a twist, it wouldn’t be a surprise if this version of Super Saiyan 3 resurfaced in some alternative history.

Until then, we can only speculate and appreciate the countless transformations we already know and love. Stay tuned, because in “Dragon Ball”, the surprises never stop coming!
