In the description of Blue Lock we can read:

The story begins with the elimination of the Japanese national team from the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which led the Japan Football Union to start a training program to prepare a student team that will participate in the 2022 World Cup. Isagi Yoichi receives the invitation to join this program shortly after his team loses the opportunity to participate in the National Championship, for having passed the ball to his less skilled teammate, who obviously missed the goal, denoting Isagi’s cowardice for not daring to finish the play himself.

Their coach is Ego Jinpachi, who aims to dispel the idea that “Japan is weak in football” by implementing a radical new training regime: isolating 300 young men in a prison-like institution called “Blue Lock” and subjecting them to rigorous training to create “the greatest, most talented and selfish goalscorer in the world.”
