Dragon Ball: How Much Has Goku Changed Since Episode 1?

When we think of “Dragon Ball”, we can’t help but remember Goku. The guy is the anime’s most iconic protagonist and has changed so much since he first appeared. Let’s take a peek at this transformation over the years.

Evolution in Design

“From Saiyan Boy to Legend”

The Goku we know today, with his striking features and defined muscles, began his journey in December 1984 in Akira Toriyama’s manga. Fun fact: before appearing as we know, Goku was supposed to be a more humanized monkey, an idea that was abandoned to make him more relatable. Inspired by the Chinese classic “Journey To The West,” 11-14 year old Goku has maintained a consistent design, with subtle changes in clothing and expressions. But it was in the anime adaptation, in 1986, that he gained color and voice, completing the image we have today.

The first major design change came after the battle with King Piccolo, when a time jump transformed Goku into an 18-year-old young man. At 23, during the confrontation with Vegeta, he became more muscular, and from the Frieza Saga onwards, Goku’s adult look became established, persisting through the original series, in “Dragon Ball GT” and, with some updates, in “Dragon Ball Super”.

Personality traits

“From Assassin to Reluctant Hero”

It’s interesting to note how Goku’s personality has changed. At first, he was a killing machine, not hesitating to eliminate anyone. But, as he grew up, this aspect faded away. From an independent childhood survivor, Goku has transformed into an adult who depends on others for food, clothing, and money. His social circle grew, including former enemies and forming a family.

However, a significant change was in his approach to fights. While he lost his temper when friends got hurt in “Dragon Ball Z” and “Dragon Ball Super,” his focus shifted to relentless training. This made him a distant father figure, always training and putting others at risk for selfish purposes, very different from the Goku we knew.

Power Level

“From Car Lifter to Rival of Gods”

Goku is known for his power-ups and transformations. From the landmark moment he became Super Saiyan to Ultra Instinct, these changes have not only elevated his power but also left a legacy in pop culture. He started out struggling to lift a car and now, he is comparable to a God of Destruction, capable of destroying planets.

Goku’s evolution in “Dragon Ball” is not just about powers and looks, but also about growth and changing perspectives. It is a reflection of how a character can evolve, maintaining the essence, but adapting to new challenges and times. And as long as “Dragon Ball” continues its legendary journey, we can be sure that Goku will continue reaching new heights.
