Jujutsu Kaisen: Why might Yuji die in the end?

In the universe of “Jujutsu Kaisen“, the current moment is one of intense expectation and emotion. The climax of the Culling Game arc captured fans’ attention, marked by the rise of Sukuna as the main threat on the antagonists’ side. After Kenjaku’s death, Sukuna establishes himself not only as the sole villain, but also as a central and menacing figure in the narrative.

Sukuna now faces what appears to be his final battle, challenging characters like Yuta, Rika and Yuji. This confrontation is not only a tension spike in the plot, but also a possible turning point for Sukuna. “Jujutsu Kaisen” is known for not hesitating to eliminate important characters, and Yuji, despite being the protagonist, could be another victim of this trend.

The Deadly Trajectory of Characters in Jujutsu Kaisen

The series, throughout its history, has never wavered from killing off central characters. From the first episodes, beloved figures like Junpei and Nanami were lost, with shocking and unexpected deaths. The Shibuya arc, for example, was notable for the tragic fate of Nobara, one of the main characters of the JJK trio. Her death symbolized a turning point in the series, underlining that no one is safe, not even those most central to the plot. The Culling Game arc reinforced this idea with the loss of characters like Gojo, Kashimo and Higuruma, raising the stakes and uncertainty about the fate of the survivors.

Yuji’s Worrying Fate

Although Yuji is the protagonist, this does not immunize him against a potential tragic end. The narrative has subtly prepared the ground for his possible death, building an arc in which his desire is to help as many people as possible before an inevitable end. His goal of saving lives can, paradoxically, lead him to the ultimate sacrifice, culminating in a heroic death that would be in line with the themes of the series.

Sukuna: The Shadow of Death over Yuji

The most imminent threat to Yuji is Sukuna, the powerful King of Curses. Sukuna, standing out as a formidable antagonist, has already demonstrated that he is superior even to Gojo. While Yuji displays an indomitable spirit, the difference in power between him and Sukuna is abysmal, suggesting that if there is to be a defeat, it will be at Sukuna’s hands.

The Uncertain Ending of Jujutsu Kaisen

Considering the series’ history and the author’s statements about his willingness to sacrifice characters to enrich the narrative, Yuji’s death at the end of the Culling Game arc would not be surprising. Furthermore, it is worth remembering that there was a moment, at the beginning of the series, when the cancellation could have resulted in Yuji’s permanent death, reinforcing the unpredictability of the characters’ fates.

Jujutsu Kaisen continues to defy expectations, keeping fans in constant suspense about its characters’ futures. The series is available to read on Viz Media, Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app, with the next chapter scheduled to be released on February 4, 2024.
