Kantai Collection is a very famous game about warships in the shape of cute girls that you collect and send to face enemies in naval battles and that gained a strong competitor years ago, Azur Lane.
And if there’s one big difference between Kantai Collection and Azur Lane, it’s the girls’ designs. You see, both games take the same real-life warships and turn them into ship-girl versions, but Azur Lane’s designs seem more modern than Kantai Collection’s.
To give a small example, this is Souryuu in Kantai Collection:

Kantai Collection Illustrator Receives Death Threats Over Old Ship Girl Design
Kia Asamiya has been commissioned to illustrate a new ship girl for Kantai Collection, the USS Lexington, and you can see her design below:
What do you think of its design? It turns out that we have a lot of fans of the game who didn’t like its 80s or 90s look, with many saying that the art isn’t to their liking.
Some opinions range from people who liked the design but thought it didn’t fit in with the rest of the girls in her class, to others who didn’t like her old design. Some even pointed out “mistakes” in her design compared to the real ship she’s based on.
And we have some pretty extreme people who have started threatening the illustrator, Kia Asamiya, with death because of this design. Kantai Collection informed that it will take legal action against the threats made to the illustrator:
At this moment the profile of illustrator Kia Asamiya is locked on Twitterbut according to comments I saw on forums, he stopped going to Comiket due to the threats and he has already informed the police about the threats he received.
Regarding the case, some profiles are publishing that the character is beautiful and that Kia Asamiya did a good job, another commented that “Kantai Collection players are complicated” and another person, upon learning about the whole controversy, was surprised that the reason was the girl’s design “Is that all there is to threatening him?” Another said: “I hate her look, but it’s no reason to threaten the illustrator”.
