MyAnimeList reveals its highest-ranked anime characters in 2023

Starting with anime giant MyAnimeList, which is practically the otaku bible, they did something pretty cool at the end of last year. On December 30, 2023, the platform released a list of the most iconic characters that emerged that year, based on the opinions of more than 18 million active users. That’s right, 18 million! And guess what? It was only a character from a new anime, so no Luffy, Levi or Gojo, who have been beloved for some time.

Now, let’s go to the top of the podium: Kana Arima, from “Oshi no Ko”, simply killed it, taking almost a third of the votes! With 15 thousand votes, she left Frieren, from “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End”, in the dust with her 9 thousand votes. The list was very varied, showing that the public enjoys a mix of personalities, from the quiet and serious to the super lively and extroverted. Some good examples are Gabimaru and Sagiri Yamada Asaemon from “Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku”, and Maomao from “The Apothecary Diaries”.

Speaking more about the champion, Kana from “Oshi no Ko”, she has had quite a career. She started out as a somewhat arrogant and tough character, but over time, she showed other facets, such as humility and even a certain self-questioning. At the end of the first season, she was already seen as a more mature, logical and loyal person, ready to face challenges, even with her insecurities.

“Oshi no Ko” was a resounding success in 2023, ranking third in the MyAnimeList anime top of that year. Not only was it a hit among fans, but it also caught attention in Japan, being one of the most watched anime there. Even on Google, the series took off, entering the list of most searched terms.

And what’s next? Well, a teaser for the second season of “Oshi no Ko” has already appeared, promising more from Kana and her gang. And if you want to watch, the series is available on HIDIVE, which describes the plot in a very interesting way: “Dr. Goro is reborn as the son of star Ai Hoshino after being killed by an obsessed fan. And now?”
