There is a strong aversion in China towards kimonos, seen as a symbol of Japanese tradition. This stance is so strict that there have been cases of women being detained for wearing kimonos.
In China, women are not allowed to wear kimonos, regardless of whether they are cosplaying at an anime event. Kimonos are considered a symbol of oppression in the country.
Recently, a video went viral on the internet showing a cosplayer of the character Nezuko, from the popular manga series “Kimetsu no Yaiba,” being reprimanded at an anime event in China for wearing a kimono.
Nezuko Cosplayer Gets Scolded for Wearing Kimono at Event in China
Nezuko Kamado is one of the main characters in “Kimetsu no Yaiba,” and her outfit includes a pink kimono with a petal pattern and a checkered sash.
Normally, there would be no reason to complain about this cosplay. However, in the video, security guards approach the young woman and state that wearing a kimono was prohibited, following a rule set by the event organizers.Reactions to the incident varied, but most Chinese people reportedly supported the security guards’ actions and opposed the girl. But let’s take a look at some of the opinions below:
“What about cosplaying Western characters then?”
“Why continue to make these conventions if personal taste cannot be expressed?”
“I suggest banning all Japanese anime and elements”
“An anime convention that bans Japanese manga characters, what’s left then?”
“Saying you can’t wear Japanese anime clothes to an anime convention, who’s going to believe it?”
“If they hate Japan so much, they should ban all Japanese elements from the anime event.”
“If they hadn’t organized the convention from the beginning, there wouldn’t be these problems.”
“They should just make it a Chinese anime convention.”
“There are also characters with kimonos in Genshin Impact”
Another episode of sharp anti-Japanese sentiment demonstrated in the country where even cosplays at anime conventions are being severely limited, preventing fans from expressing their personal tastes.
