A NHK released a promotional video and a new promotional image of the adaptation for anime from the novel Karasu wa Aruji o Erabanai (The Raven Does Not Choose its Master) by Chisato Abe, the second novel in her novel series Yatagarasuwhich debuts in April 2024. Additionally, the production and voice cast were revealed.
The animation is by Studio Pierrot, directed by Yoshiaki Kyougoku (first two seasons and Laid-Back Camp film). Meanwhile, the script is by Yukiko Yamamuro (Touch (live-action film) and the character design is by Takumo Norita (Lagrange – The Flower of Rin-ne, Broken Blade). Eishi Segawa (Ushio & Tora both seasons, Gintama (live-action film)) is composing the music and Yuji Tange is the sound director. Overall production is by NHK, NHK Enterprises It is Pierrot.
In the voice cast (seiyuu’s), we have:
- Mutsumi Tamura as Yukiya
- Miyu Irino as the Imperial Prince (Wakamiya).
In 2012, Chisato Abe launched the novel series with the first novel Karasu ni Hitoe wa Niawanai. The first part has six novels, including Karasu wa Aruji o Erabanai, released in 2013, and a parallel story novel. So far, the second part of the series has inspired three novels (the latest released in October 2022) and one side-story novel.
Additionally, the first two novels in the series inspired adaptations of mango. Natsumi Matsuzaki designed the adaptation of the mango in Karasu ni Hitoe wa Niawanaiwhich was displayed in the application Comic Days from the Kodansha from June 2018 to April 2020.
History of books
The books explore the world of the yatagarasu (the Japanese name for a variant of the mythical crow gods that appear in East Asian folk mythologies), who can shapeshift between human and crow, inhabiting Yamauchi, a parallel world created by Yamagami. Thus, this world, evoking Heian-era Japan, is linked to our human world.

In the fantasy world of Yamauchi, the Yatagarasu dwell. Yukiya, a young Yatagarasu, becomes personal assistant to the eccentric Crown Prince Wakamiya. He quickly becomes involved in plots to overthrow the heir to the imperial throne.
