Before becoming demons, Muzan’s Upper Moon Demons were humans who at one point in their lives became demons.
Then what is the reason they “let go” of their humanity to become demons?
1. Gyutaro and Daki – Sixth Upper Moon Demon
dock. Ufotable/ Kimetsu no YaibaGyutaro was born with a disease and poor physical condition, so he is often bullied by others. On the other hand, his sister Daki was born very beautiful and perfect.
But one day there was a samurai who insulted Gyutaro. Daki was angry and stabbed the samurai, as a result Daki was burned alive.
But when he saw his brother being burned alive, Gyutaro was angry and killed the samurai who burned his brother. However, Gyutaro was also injured.
Gyutaro in a dying condition meets Doma. At that moment Gyutaro is ready to do anything to save Daki, he also accepts Doma’s blood to become a devil with Daki.
2. Kaigaku – The Sixth Upper Moon Demon
Shueisha/Kimetsu no YaibaKaigaku is a cowardly child, he is ready to do anything to save his life, including sacrificing Himejima and the other orphans.
There was a moment when Zenitsu’s senior and former Lightning Hashira’s student met Kokushibo and lost.
Afraid of dying, Kaigaku surrendered and asked Kokushibo for forgiveness. Kokushibo offers him a choice, he becomes a demon or dies.
Of course, the cowardly Kaigaku chose to become a devil.
3. Gyokko – The Fifth Upper Moon Demon
Gyokko’s true form (doc. Ufotable/ Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc)When he was still human, Gyokko’s name was Managi, the son of a fisherman whose parents died and not long after his parents’ corpses were found on the coast. Since then, Gyokko has become fond of corpses and considers them as art.
Managi was very fascinated by fish carcasses, he was considered strange by the locals because of this. One day there was a little boy who teased Managi’s fondness for fish carcasses, Managi killed the boy and put him in a jar.
One day the child’s parents found the body of their child and the murderer Managi. Managi was stabbed and left to die, but before he died, Muzan came and transformed Managi into Gyokko, the Upper Moon Demon.
4. Hantengu – The Fourth Upper Moon Demon
Hantengu, Upper Moon 4 (doc. Ufotable/ Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc)Since he was a human, Hantengu was a skilled murderer and con artist, where he always pretended to be an innocent victim, and liked to blame others.
One day, he was caught for all his crimes and was about to be sentenced to death, Hantengu still tried to trick him so that he would not be sentenced to death, including lying that he was blind.
While imprisoned and awaiting execution, Muzan came and helped him, turning Hantengu into a demon.
5. Nakime – Fourth Upper Moon Demon
Nakime (doc. Ufotable/ Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc)When she was still human, Nakime was a biwa player with a husband who liked to gamble. One day her husband stole Nakime’s kimono and used it as gambling capital. Nakime got angry and killed her husband.
The problem is, the kimono is the only nice outfit she has for biwa performances.
She was forced to play the biwa in front of an audience in a shabby kimono, which the audience didn’t like. Because of her nervousness, Nakime’s biwa playing actually got better.
Loving the thrill, Nakime has a habit of killing someone before showing off her biwa playing. But one day her target is Muzan, of course Nakime loses, but Muzan likes her passion and turns her into a demon.
6. Akaza – The Third Upper Moon Demon
dock. Ufotable/ Kimetsu no YaibaAkaza’s name when he was human was Hakuji. He had a sickly father but they were poor, Hakuji stole and was often punished, all so he could buy his father’s medicine.
But his father ended his life because he didn’t want to be a burden to Hakuji. Sad, Hakuji met Keizo who had a martial arts dojo and Hakuji joined to take care of Koyuki, Keizo’s sick daughter, later Hakuji and Koyuki got married.
One day, Keizo’s rival dojo poisoned the waters of Keizo’s dojo, killing Keizo and Koyuki. Enraged, Hakuji brutally killed dozens of the rival sword dojo members using only his bare hands.
Muzan heard this news, he was surprised because he did not send his demons to kill dozens of sword masters, it turned out that the perpetrators were humans. Muzan then turned Hakuji into Akaza.
7. Doma – Second Upper Moon Demon
dock. Ufotable/ Kimetsu no YaibaDoma was born with a unique condition, where his eyes are rainbow colored. People think he can communicate with God and is used as a cult by his parents. Doma certainly can’t communicate with God.
He grew up as an apathetic child who could not understand human feelings. When his parents died, he was even annoyed because their corpses made the room dirty and smelly.
At the age of 20 he met Muzan and was turned into a devil. Since then Doma has remained the leader of his sect.
1. Kokushibo – First Upper Moon Demon
Kokushibo (doc. Ufotable/ Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc)When he was human, his name was Michikatsu Tsugikuni, the twin brother of Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the strongest demon hunter.
Twins are considered unlucky, plus Yoriichi was born with a mark on his face, he wanted to be killed by his father but was thwarted by their mother.
Michikatsu and Yoriichi live very differently where Michikatsu is happier and more normal than little Yoriichi. Both of them want to become strong samurai, but it turns out that Yoriichi’s talent is superior to Michikatsu’s, he becomes jealous.
After his encounter with the demon, Michikatsu trained with Yoriichi as a demon slayer and eventually Michikatsu learned the Moon Breathing Technique. However, Michikatu’s envy of Yoriichi continued to grow.
Michikatsu is jealous and upset because he can’t be stronger than his twin, he also shows the mark of a demon hunter and will die at a young age, because of that he accepts Muzan’s offer to become a demon.
