Editor's Review
“Holmes of Kyoto” is a Japanese mystery novel series that has been adapted into an anime. The story is set in the heart of Kyoto’s Teramachi Sanjou shopping district, in an antique shop. The series follows the life of high school girl Aoi Mashiro, who ends up working part-time at the shop.
Aoi Mashiro is a second-year high school student who has moved from Omiya in Saitama to Kyoto. She is honest, straightforward, and has a good intuition with antiques. She can see the true value and can determine if the articles are genuine or not.
The other main character is Kiyotaka Yagashira, the son of the shop’s owner. Kiyotaka is a 22-year-old graduate student at Kyoto University and an apprentice at his family’s antique shop. He is handsome, gentle, but strict with himself and those around him. His nickname “Holmes” stems from his amazing deduction skills, as shown when he is able to discern a fake antique from a con artist.
Together, Aoi and Kiyotaka solve odd cases brought to them by various clients. The series not only focuses on the mystery aspect but also explores the characters’ personal lives and their interactions with each other. It provides a glimpse into the world of antiques and gives viewers a taste of Kyoto’s rich history and culture.
“Holmes of Kyoto” stands out for its unique setting and engaging plot. The series successfully combines elements of mystery and drama, making it a captivating watch. The character development is well-executed, with both Aoi and Kiyotaka being multi-dimensional characters with their own strengths and weaknesses.
