Synopsis

From wimp to warrior. Sort of…

Yeah, Kenichi’s a total wimp. He’s always getting picked on and doesn’t have a lot of friends to stick up for him. The guy needs motivation if he hopes to graduate in one piece. Well, Miu’s the perfect motivation. She’s hot, she accepts him, and she just so happens to live at a dojo with six martial arts masters. You could say fate has led Kenichi to their door, or you could say he was just following the hottie. Either way, he’s about to get whipped into serious shape. If he can survive some hard-core training, he might survive another day at school. He might even score with Miu. Yeah, you could call Kenichi a wimp. But let’s go with underdog instead.

Editor's Review
KenIchi: The Mightiest Disciple

“KenIchi: The Mightiest Disciple” is an anime that presents a unique and somewhat brilliant concept, but its execution has been met with mixed reviews.

The story revolves around Kenichi Shirahama, a high schooler who is always getting picked on by everyone and has no confidence in his abilities whatsoever. But that doesn’t stop him from doing the right thing and stepping into some pretty hairy situations despite his shortcomings. The story begins with Kenichi wanting to get stronger because of his will to protect his friends. As a result, he joins the Ryōzanpaku dojo and from there on out, every episode has meaning, and will have you wanting for more.

One of the standout features of “KenIchi: The Mightiest Disciple” is its protagonist, Kenichi. Despite his seemingly irresponsible nature, Kenichi’s never-say-die attitude and his journey through a sequence of ordeals to realize his true strength make him a truly unique character.

The narrative of “KenIchi: The Mightiest Disciple” follows a very formulaic approach. However, this doesn’t mean it’s not enjoyable. The animation is fair, and the sound is nothing spectacular, but nothing memorable. The characters are moderately well designed, but they follow cliched “five-guy-superhero-team” stereotypes.

Despite these criticisms, “KenIchi: The Mightiest Disciple” is still a good introduction to the franchise. The anime is top-notch, and both the subbed and dubbed versions are enjoyable. However, the manga of “KenIchi: The Mightiest Disciple” tells a much more complete story.

In conclusion, “KenIchi: The Mightiest Disciple” is a series that had potential but was ultimately let down by its execution. Its unique premise, engaging characters, and high-quality animation make it a series worth watching. However, viewers should be prepared for some frustrating character behaviors and a narrative that may not meet their expectations.
