Synopsis

The world is divided into two factions: humans and monsters called katawara. Despite being a katawara, Tama loves humans and vows to protect them from evil, even if it means fighting her own kind. Her brother Jinka, however, hates humans, despite mostly being one. The siblings are joined by a cowardly swordsman named Shinsuke, who wants to learn how to become strong.

When the group uncovers a plot to experiment on humans and transform them into monsters, they vow to defeat whoever is behind it... Even if it means battling an entire army of warriors.

Editor's Review
Sengoku Youko

Sengoku Youko is an anime series that adapts the manga by Satoshi Mizukami, the author of Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer and Spirit Circle. The series is set in a feudal Japan where humans and monsters, known as katawara, coexist in a state of war and chaos. The series follows the adventures of Tama, a half-human half-monster girl who wants to protect humans from evil katawara, her brother Jinka, who despises humans and seeks to destroy them, and Shinsuke, a cowardly swordsman who joins them in their journey. The series explores the themes of friendship, loyalty, betrayal, revenge, and destiny, as the characters face various enemies and challenges in their quest to change the world.

The series is produced by White Fox, the studio behind Re:Zero and Steins;Gate, and directed by Masahiro Aizawa, who worked as a chief animation director on Yurikuma Arashi. The series has a total of 37 episodes, divided into three arcs: the brothers arc, the thousand demons arc, and the final arc. The series has a faithful adaptation of the manga, with some minor changes and additions to improve the pacing and the animation. The series has a colorful and detailed art style, with fluid and dynamic action scenes. The series also has a memorable and fitting soundtrack, composed by Yasuharu Takanashi, Akinari Suzuki, and Johannes Nilsson.

The series has a diverse and likable cast of characters, each with their own personality, backstory, and development. Tama is a cheerful and kind-hearted girl who loves humans and wants to make friends with them, despite being discriminated and feared by them. She has a strong sense of justice and compassion, and uses her powerful whip to fight against evil. Jinka is a cold and ruthless boy who hates humans and wants to wipe them out, due to his tragic past and his curse. He has a twisted sense of humor and a cunning mind, and uses his sword and his army of monsters to cause havoc. Shinsuke is a timid and clumsy boy who dreams of becoming a strong and brave swordsman, but lacks the courage and the skill to do so. He is often dragged into trouble by Tama and Jinka, but he also learns from them and grows as a person. The series also features other interesting and complex characters, such as Douren, a mysterious and charismatic leader of the katawara, Tsukiko, a loyal and devoted human girl who serves Jinka, and Nau, a cute and innocent fairy who befriends Tama.

Sengoku Youko is an anime series that offers a thrilling and emotional story of adventure and friendship, with a touch of humor and romance. The series is recommended for fans of the manga, as well as fans of action, fantasy, and historical anime.
