Synopsis
Fifteen years ago, God abandoned the world and closed the gate to Heaven, leaving the souls of humankind trapped in limbo. With the dead unable to rest and the living unable to have children, the world is slowly coming to a halt. The only key to mankind’s salvation rests with the Gravekeepers, mysterious beings charged with the task of sending the deceased to their final resting place. Twelve-year-old Ai, one of the last children in the world, soon finds herself shouldered with the burden of becoming her village’s newest Gravekeeper. But beneath the village’s unassuming exterior lies a dark secret that is revealed with the arrival of a gun-wielding stranger in black. With her position as a Gravekeeper now uncertain, Ai has no choice but to set out to put the living dead to rest. But in a world where no one can die, is death truly the ultimate blessing?

Editor's Review
“Sunday Without God” is an anime series that offers a unique blend of fantasy, mystery, and adventure. The series revolves around a world where God has abandoned humanity. As a result, life cannot end nor can new life be born, and the “dead” walk restlessly among the living. However, before giving in to the world, God left behind “gravekeepers,” mystical beings capable of putting the dead to rest through a proper burial. The story begins with a girl named “Ai Austin,” who belongs to the last generation of humans born since God abandoned Earth 12 years ago. Ai’s a gravekeeper and eventually embarks on a journey to search for herself and later, save the world.
The series is characterized by its well-realized narrative and world. The art by Tetsuo Hara is incredible, who draws with such visceral detail towards its action-orientated players. Each episode presents a new challenge for Ai, keeping viewers engaged and entertained. The series is also praised for its well-written script, and the tragic origin stories of the various cursed weapons, told in flashbacks using a different animation style, are told with efficiency and emotion.
However, “Sunday Without God” is not without its flaws. Some viewers may find the series’ pacing to be uneven. Additionally, the series can be a bit rough around the edges, particularly in its early episodes.
Despite these minor shortcomings, “Sunday Without God” remains a standout series. Its unique premise, engaging characters, and complex plot make it a must-watch for any anime fan. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the genre or a newcomer, “Sunday Without God” is sure to provide an enjoyable and memorable viewing experience.
