Synopsis
When an alien race known as the Oni invade Earth, the chronically unlucky and unapologetically lecherous Ataru Moroboshi is selected as humanity’s representative in a duel for the fate of the planet! His opponent is Lum, the Oni’s very pretty princess, and it’s only thanks to Ataru’s unscrupulous behavior that he’s able to scrape out a win in a treacherous game of tag against her. Ataru thinks he’s had his lucky break at last, but when Lum takes a shine to him off the battlefield, the conflict follows him home as Lum invades not only planet Earth, but also the womanizing Ataru’s love life!

Editor's Review
“Urusei Yatsura” is a classic Japanese manga series that has been adapted into an anime. The series was written and illustrated by Rumiko Takahashi and was serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shōnen Sunday from September 1978 to February 1987. The series has a total of 366 individual chapters that were published in 34 tankōbon volumes.
The plot of “Urusei Yatsura” is centered around an alien race known as the Oni who arrive on Earth with the intention of invading the planet. Instead of taking over the planet by force, the Oni give humans a chance to compete for the rights to the planet through a competition. The competition is a variant of tag, where a selected human player must touch the horns of the Oni player within a week.
The human player selected by the computer is Ataru Moroboshi, a highly lascivious, extremely unlucky, and stupid high school student from the Japanese city of Tomobiki. The Oni player is Princess Lum, the daughter of the leader of the invasion attempt. Despite his initial reluctance to participate in the competition, Ataru becomes extremely interested in the game when he meets Lum.
When the competition begins, Lum surprises everyone by flying, and Ataru finds himself unable to catch her. Before the final day of competition, Ataru’s girlfriend, Shinobu Miyake, encourages him by promising to marry him if he wins. On the final day of competition, Ataru wins by catching Lum’s bikini top, which causes her to stop protecting her horns and cover her modesty instead.
“Urusei Yatsura” is not just about an alien invasion; it’s also a romantic comedy that makes heavy use of Japanese mythology, culture, and puns. The series has been positively received both in and out of Japan from fans and critics alike. It has over 35 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time.
