Synopsis

True Calendar (T.C.) 71 - A new age where 70% of the human population lives in space thanks to the development of "Dyson Sphere", a city in space.

The world is divided into two main powers: The Dorssia Military Pact Federation, a power which grew out of a military alliance, and the Atlantic Rim United States (ARUS), which grew in power as it expanded its trade agreements. The minor nation of JIOR has declared neutrality between these two forces and maintains its peace through economic prosperity.

Within the JIOR's Sphere, Haruto Tokishima lived an ordinary life as a high school student in the division known as "Module 77"—until the Dorssian military begins their sudden invasion!

But the whole world will be shaken when Haruto meets the mysterious humanoid weapon, Valvrave!

Editor's Review
Valvrave the Liberator

“Valvrave the Liberator” is an original anime series by Sunrise that aired from April 12, 2013, to June 28, 2013. The series consists of 12 episodes and is a unique blend of action and sci-fi genres.

The story is set in the 71st year of the True Era, where humans have successfully expanded into space and started living in independent galactic colonies. The world itself is split between two major nations: the Atlantic Rim United States (ARUS) and the Dorssia Military Pact Federation (Dorssia)—superpowers that wage war against each other on Earth and far into outer space. In this war-torn era, a third faction comprised of Japan and Islands of the Oceanian Republic (JIOR), reside peacefully and prosper economically, maintaining neutrality between themselves and their militant neighbors.

The protagonist of the series is Haruto Tokishima, a student at Sakimori Academy located in JIOR. The peaceful life of Haruto takes a drastic turn when a sudden Dorssian fleet breaches the neutral colony. Their objective is to seize the Valvraves: powerful, but rumored mechanized weapons hidden deep within Sakimori Academy. In the ensuing chaos, Haruto stumbles upon one of the targeted Valvraves and seals a contract for its power in exchange for his humanity.

One of the standout aspects of “Valvrave the Liberator” is its unpredictability. While it does follow certain conventional mecha elements, it is at times spectacularly unpredictable and enthusiastically ridiculous, even by mecha standards. The series takes full advantage of its unique premise and delivers plenty of action through its quirky characters and their interactions.

The animation quality is consistent, and the voice acting remains true to the characters. The series also features an impressive original soundtrack that enhances the viewing experience.

However, “Valvrave the Liberator” is not without its flaws. Some viewers may find the plot to be confounding and, in its use of supernatural elements, extremely inconsistent. The side effects of Haruto’s “infection” by the Valvrave seem to manifest early on as seizure-like fits but later on, the main concern of humans using Valvraves is that it apparently drains their life force.

In conclusion, “Valvrave the Liberator” is a unique anime that offers a fresh perspective on the action and sci-fi genres. While it may lack a deep plot or complex character development, it more than makes up for it with its intense action scenes, charming characters, and endearing storyline. If you’re a fan of action-packed anime with a touch of mythology, “Valvrave the Liberator” might be worth a watch.
