Studio Ghibli signs cooperation agreement with Chinese company Alibaba for animation production

According to the The Hollywood Reporter the famous Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away; My Neighbor Totoro; The Walking Castle; Princess Mononoke, The Boy and the Crane) signed a cooperation agreement with the Chinese Alibaba to launch new anime experiences and business initiatives in the large anime market China.

The two companies signed a strategic partnership agreement on potential animation productions and a major immersive Studio Ghibli exhibition that will be launched at China in 2024.

The agreement was reached in January 2024 in Tokyo with the presence of the president of Studio Ghibli, Toshio Suzukiand the president of Alibaba Pictures, Li Jie.

According to AlibabaStudio Ghibli’s first immersive exhibition will take place in Shanghai.

O Studio Ghibli has been showing the films of the renowned director Hayao Miyazaki in China for the first time in recent years, including My Neighbor Totoro in 2018, Spirited Away in 2019, Ponyo in 2020, Castle in the Sky in May 2023 and Pork Rosso last November. Sources indicate that this agreement will also bring The Boy and the Crane coming soon to cinemas in China.
