The Boy and the Heron is not Hayao Miyazaki’s last anime film

Speaking with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation at the Toronto International Film Festival, Junichi Nishiokathe head of public relations for the Studio Ghiblistated that The Boy and the Heron (The Boy and the Crane) is not the last anime film by the renowned director Hayao Miyazaki.

The Boy and the Heron isn’t Miyazaki’s last film, and he’s already hitting the office with new ideas.

The 82-year-old director has already announced his retirement several times, but he always ends up returning to Studio Ghibli to create yet another anime film.

In The Boy and the Heron the director Hayao Miyazaki is credited with original work in addition to directing the film and writing the story. takeshi honda (Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, Rebuild of Evangelion films) is the animation director. Joe Hisaishi (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro) composed the music. The co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Toshio Suzukiis the producer.

miyazaki was inspired by this anime film in the novel How Do You Live? by Genzaburō Yoshino from 1937. He added that this book is a story that has great meaning for the protagonist of his film.

The story takes place during World War II. After Mahito loses his mother during the Tokyo bombings, he and his father move to the countryside. There, Mahito’s father remarries his late mother’s pregnant sister. As Mahito struggles with his situation, he encounters a talking crane and enters another world with the promise that he will be able to find his mother again.
