Gwijá is ninety-two years old and lives in South Korea. After seven decades of waiting, he still has the desire to reunite with his eldest son, from whom he was separated when he was in a column of refugees fleeing from northern Korea. Gwijá had to stop to breastfeed her baby daughter and lost her husband and son in the crowd. Now, at a meeting organized by the Red Cross, her friend Jeong-Sun is reunited with her younger sister, after sixty-eight years of separation. Gwijá just wants to have the same luck and find his son again.

In 1950, the Korean War separated entire families, who were left on opposite sides of an impassable border. Based on the interviews that Keum Suk Gendry-Kim conducted and the various testimonies he gathered (among them, that of his own mother), the book The Wait reconstructs the family trauma caused by the division of Korea and the war, and its painful consequences.
