Art style

Our style is inspired by classic animation, especially from Japan in the 70s and 80s.

Vivarium presents a completely hand-drawn traditional animation cell process – a reflection of the media from which it is inspired. Every frame of the game is handcrafted with love!

The environments of Vivarium are represented in a rich, densely saturated gouache painting. Each area has its own original artwork and highly detailed painted scenery.

Vivarium uses subtle post-processing, lighting and color grading to achieve a retro-cinematic aesthetic. Hand-placed dynamic day/night cycle lighting. Grain, lens focus blur, and cell shadow are all applied in the engine. These effects reproduce the look of traditional animation photographed and printed on film.”
