The popular light novel series Rascal Does Not Dream (Seishun Buta Yarou) by Hajime Kamoshida is getting a new anime adaptation that follows the protagonist Sakuta Azusagawa and his girlfriend Mai Sakurajima as they enter college. Aniplex has released a trailer for the upcoming anime, which you can watch below. The trailer also reveals the promotional poster for the exhibition “Rascal Does Not Dream of School Memory -Aobuta Exhibition-”, which will be held in Tokyo from March 12th to 24th. The exhibition will feature original illustrations, character goods, and a special event called “Rascal Does Not Dream of Sugar Diary” on April 7th.

The new anime is based on the 8th and 9th volumes of the light novel series: Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out and Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid. It is a sequel to the previous anime adaptations: the 13-episode TV series that aired in 2018 and the movie Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl that premiered in 2019. The movie covered the 6th and 7th volumes of the light novel series and was a critical and commercial success.

The new anime will have the same staff and cast as the previous ones. CloverWorks studio will handle the animation, Soichi Masui will direct, Masahiro Yokotani will write the script, and Satomi Tamura will design the characters. Rascal Does Not Dream is a romantic comedy and mystery series that revolves around the phenomenon of “puberty syndrome”, which causes strange and supernatural events to happen to teenagers. Sakuta Azusagawa is a high school student who meets a bunny girl named Mai Sakurajima, who is actually a famous actress on hiatus. For some reason, only Sakuta can see Mai’s bunny ears and tail, and he decides to help her find out why. Along the way, he encounters other girls who suffer from different forms of puberty syndrome and tries to solve their problems. The series explores themes such as identity, self-esteem, love, and friendship.

The light novel series began publication in April 2014 and has 11 volumes so far. It has also been adapted into a manga and a video game.
