Portgas D. Ace has two tattoos that stand out on his One Piece. The first is the writing ASCE with a crossed S on his left arm, the second is the Whitebeard symbol on his back.
So, what is the meaning of Portgas D. Ace’s ASCE tattoo? One Piece? Fans One Piece Those who have been following this series for a long time probably already know. If not, here is the answer!
1. In memory of Sabo
The crossed S on Ace’s tattoo commemorates Sabo.
Do you still remember the Sabo pirate flag?
The Sabo pirate flag shows the letter S with two bones.
So yes… ASCE consists of “Ace” which is Ace’s name and crossed S which is a form of respect for Sabo.
Ace and Luffy thought that Sabo had died first. Sabo was actually saved by Dragon, but he experienced a long period of amnesia and only remembered his past when he saw the news of Ace’s death.
2. In an alternate reality where Sabo is not thought to be dead…
The cover of chapter 596 shows an alternative reality where Sabo is not thought to be dead.
Take a good look at the tattoo on Ace’s arm. It says “Ace” without the crossed S.
This further confirms that, yes, the crossed S on Ace’s ASCE tattoo is a tribute to Sabo.
If only Sabo wasn’t thought to be dead, the tattoo on Ace’s arm would only have his name written on it.
3. In the main story One PieceDuring his lifetime, Ace didn’t know that Sabo was safe
Sabo only remembered his past after seeing the news of Ace’s death.
He never got to meet Ace again, so throughout his life Ace never realized that Sabo was actually safe.
At least, in Dressrosa, Sabo was able to meet Luffy.
But there is an alternative story entitled “Special Episode “Luff” which is a short story where Sabo comes to Marineford and manages to save Ace and Luffy.
In chapters 1, Sabo saves Ace and Luffy from Sakazuki.
In chapter 2, It was reported that Whitebeard died, but Sabo, Ace, and Luffy were able to meet and drink together.
In chapter 3 It is shown that Luffy is just dreaming. Then Sabo was shown waking up from a dream.
So that’s the meaning of Portgas D. Ace’s ASCE tattoo One Piece.
