Tanjiro Kamado is the main protagonist in the series Kimetsu no Yaiba by Koyoharu Gotouge. He joins the Demon Slayer Corps to fulfill his personal mission to avenge the death of his family, while also finding a way to bring back his younger sister, Nezuko, who was turned into a Demon.
As a child of a family that inherited the Breath of the Sun aka Hinokami Kagura from the legendary Demon Slayer of the Sengoku era, Yoriichi Tsugikuni, Tanjiro managed to prove his potential as a skilled swordsman.
Throughout the series, Tanjiro shows significant growth in power. In fact, during the Taisho era, he was the first Demon Slayer to successfully awaken the Demon Slayer Mark, meaning he is able to access much more powerful powers.
With his level, Tanjiro feels worthy of being on the side of the Pillars or Hashira. However, despite Tanjiro’s involvement in various fights against the Upper Moon Demon, the opportunity never came to him.
Why didn’t Tanjiro become a Hashira in Kimetsu no Yaiba? This is the situation!
1. What is Hashira?
Hashira or Pillars are the highest-ranking Demon Slayers in the Demon Slayer Corps. They are talented swordsmen who are recognized as the strongest troops owned by the organization led by Oyakata-sama.
With their level of power, the Hashira are believed to be the main foundation of the Demon Slayer Corps’ strength, where they are tasked with facing the Demons with the most dangerous threat levels, especially the Upper Moon Demon and the Demon King Muzan Kibutsuji.
As the strongest in the corps, the Demon Slayers also hold the highest authority, right under Kagaya Ubuyashiki as their current leader.
Each Pillar will usually be deployed to investigate certain locations suspected of being the hideouts of Devils. In addition, they will generally only be sent on missions if regular Devil Slayers are unable to do so.
Throughout the series Demon Slayer progressing, we have been introduced to the 11 Hashira based on the breathing techniques they mastered. Among them are the Fire Hashira, Water Hashira, Sound Hashira, Mist Hashira, Snake Hashira, Rock Hashira, Insect Hashira, Love Hashira, Wind Hashira, Lightning Hashira, and Flower Hashira.
2. There are certain conditions that must be met if you want to become a Hashira.
Well, the main reason why Tanjiro didn’t become a Hashira is because there are several requirements that need to be met if a Demon Slayer wants to reach the highest rank in the corps.
The requirement is certainly related to talent as a swordsman. This means that Tanjiro must be able to gain recognition as one of the strongest troops in the Demon Slayer Corps. Unfortunately, this claim cannot be obtained with just one or two achievements.
There are two ways that Tanjiro must do to be considered worthy of becoming a Pillar. First, he must become a Kinoe, which is the level below Hashira. While being a Kinoe, Tanjiro needs to defeat at least 50 regular Demons or 1 member of the 12 Kizuki.
As we know, Tanjiro has fought the Moon Demon many times. However, he has never won alone.
The second way is to become a Tsuguko, a candidate for successor appointed directly by Hashira. Characters known to have been chosen as Tsuguko are Kanao Tsuyuri and Mitsuri Kanroji. Even then, they can only be promoted if the related Pillar falls or retires.
To be able to meet the existing requirements, a Demon Slayer of Tanjiro’s level might need at least 2 years, because he needs to train and gain direct experience in the field.
However, there is one unique case where a Demon Slayer managed to reach the rank of Hashira in just 2 months, and Muichito Tokito is the only character who was able to do that.
3. The Demon Slayer Corps was disbanded after Muzan’s defeat.
Another reason why Tanjiro couldn’t become a Pillar was because the Demon Slayer Corps was immediately disbanded after the victory over Muzan Kibutsuji during final war.
Without further ado, the plot Kimetsu no Yaiba immediately reached its climax after the Hashira Training arc. The trigger itself occurred during the end of arc The Sword Forging Village, where Nezuko Kamado gained immunity to sunlight.
The dying Hantengu immediately reported this to his master, before the Upper Moon Demon 4 completely disappeared into ashes. That way, Muzan would target Nezuko and trigger the ultimate war, because immortality is the only thing he has dreamed of for centuries.
Infinity Castle Arc And Sunrise Countdown Arc will cover the final battle between the Demon Slayer Corps against Muzan and the remnants of the Upper Moon Demons. There will be bloodshed between both sides, but Kimetsu no Yaiba still closed with a happy ending where the Demon Slayers will be victorious.
After the defeat of Demon King Muzan, all the Demons created using his blood were also destroyed. Humanity is once again safe from the threat of the Demons that have been terrorizing them from the darkness for so long.
With that, the role of the Demon Slayer is no longer needed. Moreover, Muzan’s death also signifies that the curse that haunts the Ubuyashiki bloodline is automatically broken.
Kiriya Ubuyashiki as the leader of the corps after his father’s death officially disbanded the Demon Slayer Corps. So, neither Tanjiro nor other characters have the chance to become Hashira.
So, the reason why Tanjiro didn’t become a Hashira in Kimetsu no Yaiba is because there are conditions that need to be met and he has no more chances because Muzan has been defeated.
