Editor's Review
Citrus

“Citrus” is an anime series that stands out for its unique blend of drama, mystery, and supernatural elements. The series is based on a popular manga of the same name and takes place within a school setting.

The story revolves around Yuzu Aihara, a fashionable socialite who is forced to transfer to a new school due to her mother’s remarriage. This new school is an ultra-strict, all-girls institution that does not conform to Yuzu’s gaudy style. However, this inconvenient event is seen by Yuzu as another opportunity to make new friends, fall in love, and experience a first kiss.

The plot takes a dark turn when Yuzu discovers that the beautiful and imposing student council president, Mei Aihara, is actually her new stepsister. The relationship between the two is further complicated when Mei forces Yuzu to the ground and kisses her. This leaves Yuzu to ponder the true nature of her first kiss and the secrets behind Mei’s tortured expression.

“Citrus” is not just about voyeuristic lesbian action; it provides layered and well-developed characters whose actions are realistically influenced by both internal and external conflicts. The series explores the emotional barriers and hurdles faced by naive teenagers who are lost and confused.

One of the criticisms of “Citrus” is that it sometimes mistakes rape with love and uses physical force to conceive romance. However, despite these plot issues, “Citrus” has beautiful animation that is clean, fluid, and has excellent drawings. The camera angles and planes blend well with the narrative and emotions, focusing on the details.

In conclusion, “Citrus” is an anime series that offers a gripping and emotionally compelling tale. It may have its rough edges, but it’s well worth the ride. Whether you’re a fan of yuri anime or looking for a series with substance and depth, “Citrus” is definitely worth checking out.
