Editor's Review
“Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku” is a captivating manga series that masterfully blends elements of action, fantasy, and horror. The story is set in Edo Japan and follows the journey of Gabimaru, a legendary ninja, and his handler, the executioner Saigiri.
The plot revolves around a group of convicts and samurai who are sent to the mysterious island of Kotaku to search for the elixir of life. The island is inhabited by horrific, murderous plant monsters with unsavory plans for humanity. The criminals are treated as disposable fodder, and they are made to kill each other for the shogun’s amusement.
Despite its shounen themes and presentation, the manga deals with the darker aspects of feudal Japan. It is a character study into society’s “outsiders” and the social inequalities that drive them to break the law. The manga explores the theme: “Having compassion is more important than following the rules” in a unique way.
The art of “Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku” is very solid, excelling in the finer details. The first look at the “paradise” island is a perfect example of this, as each panel is dripping in vegetation. The tone is dark and very heavy at points, but it never reaches a point where it becomes too bleak and dreary. The humor is pretty good, usually landing whenever it comes up, able to lighten the mood for a brief moment while also not taking away from the seriousness that’s happening.
In conclusion, “Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku” is a gripping manga series that offers a unique blend of action, fantasy, and horror. It provides a fresh perspective on societal issues and the concept of morality. With its intricate plot, well-developed characters, and stunning artwork, it is a must-read for any manga enthusiast.
