Synopsis
Collaboration with Tsuburaya Productions.
Yuta Hibiki awakens with amnesia and the ability see things that others cannot. He first encounters a Gridman in the reflection of his friend Rikka Takarada's computer and it tells him to "Remember his calling," but Yuta doesn't understand what this means. Later, in the distance, he sees an extremely large monster but it doesn't move. It's only when Yuta gets to school that the two sightings make sense: a monster attacks and the hero Yuta saw in the computer screen pulls him within the computer and transforms Yuta into a giant hero named Gridman.

Editor's Review
“SSSS.Gridman” is an anime series that is a pastiche of Tokusatsu media, transformers, and landmark mecha anime. The series is heavily inspired by the 1993 series, yet it was appreciated for having a fresh and creative story. The first few episodes of the anime are slow and predictable, but as the series progresses, it turns into a better version of itself. The content of the later episodes is interesting enough to hook viewers until the end.
The series follows Yuuta Hibiki who wakes up in the room of Rikka Takarada and notices two things: he has no memories, and he can hear a mysterious voice calling his name from a nearby room. On further inspection, he finds a robot—which introduces itself as Hyper Agent Gridman—behind the screen of an old computer. Much to Yuuta’s surprise, Rikka cannot hear Gridman, nor can she see the ominous monsters looming over a thick fog as it envelopes the town outside.
“SSSS.Gridman” is filled with great references to other shows like Ultraman, Gridman, Evangelion, Transformers and many more. It’s also an anime that excels in direction, shot composition and in the use of motifs. To the unassuming viewer, it’s just another show that references other popular shows.
However, “SSSS.Gridman” has its share of flaws. The game throws you completely into the deep end, drowning you in unfamiliar technical jargon and historical lore that you feel you’re supposed to know already. There are also several disjointed scenes throughout the game with fleeting characters and hanging plot threads that clearly connect to previous Muv-Luv games.
Despite these shortcomings, “SSSS.Gridman” remains an enjoyable watch thanks to its focus on character drama and its willingness to take risks. Whether you’re a fan of mecha and terminology heavy visual novels or looking for a series with substance and depth, “SSSS.Gridman” is definitely worth checking out.
