Editor's Review
“UQ Holder!” is an anime that presents a unique premise with a charismatic protagonist and a decent supporting cast. The story revolves around Touta, a boy who has visions of a wizard that instigates him to go to the capital and climb a tower located in the city center. On his journey, he meets Evangeline Athanasia Katherine McDowell, who, due to circumstances of fate, ends up turning him into a vampire and thus making him her protege. When joining Evangeline, Touta meets other immortals, as well as various formidable enemies.
Despite its potential, the anime adaptation of “UQ Holder!” has been criticized for being disappointing. Studio J.C. Staff attempted to cram the content of over 100 chapters into a single 12-episode season. This made the story feel rushed and incomplete. Besides, it ended way too fast, and its finale was disheartening.
Moreover, the series has been criticized for being generic. It tries to be self-aware and become a parody of other shounen action anime but relies way too heavily on the tropes and clichés it is trying to subvert. It just feels like it doesn’t know what it wants to be.
Despite these criticisms, some viewers find the way the characters’ powers work very interesting. Getting powers through a tattoo is a unique concept, and the powers themselves are also very interesting and cool.
In conclusion, “UQ Holder!” is a series that had potential but was ultimately let down by its execution. Its unfocused narrative, over-reliance on clichés, and drastic changes in tone make it a difficult series to recommend. However, its unique premise and the interesting concept of powers through tattoos make it worth a watch for some viewers.
